An example of the way an illusion appears is used here to illustrate whether or not phenomena are considered to be posited through the force of cognition and whether or not there is appearance and conception. When a magician conjures a horse and ox from a pebble and stick, for the audience whose eyes have been influenced by the mantra substance, the pebble and stick appear as a horse and an ox, and they conceive them that way. Similarly, for ordinary beings who have not realized emptiness, phenomena appear to exist objectively by their own power without being posited through the force of cognitions appearance, and they conceive them that way. For the magician, however, the horse and ox merely appear, but are not conceived to exist that way. Similarly, for ordinary beings who have realized emptiness, phenomena appear as if they objectively existed by their own power without being posited through the force of cognitions appearance. Even so, they do not apprehend them to exist this way because they have realized that phenomena are merely posited through the force of their appearance to cognition.
