In this world if you walk in any place and fall into an abyss that brings about your decline, that is an extreme; [674] to fall into it is to “fall to an extreme.” Similarly, existence, nonexistence, permanence, and annihilation are called “extremes”; one who holds onto any of these falls into the abyss of a wrong view and is ruined. Thus, the reality of interdependence, which is free from the extremes of permanence and annihilation—which are places of ruin for whoever holds onto them—is the “middle” or “middle way”; it is like the center that relinquishes the two extremes of permanence and annihilation.
