Thus, there are two extremes: existence and nonexistence. Also, “extreme of existence” (yod mtha’), “extreme of permanence” (rtag mtha’), and “extreme of superimposition” (sgro ’dogs kyi mtha’) have the same meaning; and “extreme of nonexistence” (med mtha’), “extreme of annihilation” (chad mtha’), and “extreme of denigration” (skur ’debs kyi mtha’) have the same meaning. Nevertheless, “extreme” and “holding onto an extreme” do not have the same meaning; extremes do not even conventionally exist, while holding onto extremes is something that does conventionally exist. As for the meaning of “extreme,” the Principles of Elucidation (Vyākhyāyukti) says:
