Most Svātantrikas give an etymology of the term “ultimate” with reference to both the subject and object, describing it as the object (don) of the gnosis of a sublime being’s meditative equipoise that sees the paramount (dam pa) way things are. Here in the Prāsaṅgika system, however, it is explained without separating the object and the paramount; an etymology of the term is given with reference to an object comprising their common basis, as is stated in Clear Words: “It is an object and it is also paramount, so it is the ultimate (don dam pa). That itself is a truth (bden pa), so it is the ultimate truth (don dam bden pa).”69Candrakīrti, Clear Words, 163b. Thus, there is a reason why something like the basic nature (chos nyid) of a pot is said to be ultimate: it is so called because it is an object, it is paramount, and it is also a truth.
