English

An object like a pot is said to be a conventional truth because it is a truth from the perspective a deluded, conventional mind, or from a perspective that apprehends true existence. Alternatively, to describe the words “conventional” and “truth” individually: a subject that apprehends something as truly existent is said to be conventional because it obscures seeing the reality of the thing. Here, the word for conventional is saṃvṛti, which has an etymology that conveys that which is completely obscuring or concealing. This describes the word “conventional” with reference to the apprehension of true existence. Furthermore, what is unreal (brdzun pa) is said to be conventional; what is customary (tha snyad) is described as conventional, too. Clear Words describes a threefold explanation of the term.66Candrakīrti explains three meanings of saṃvṛti as “concealing/ obscuring,” “relative/

dependent,” and “convention/ custom.” See Candrakīrti, Clear Words

(Prasannapadā, D. 3860), 163a. Nevertheless, the latter two are simply explanations of the word “conventional”; they do not identify the conventional as everything that is understood to be truly existent by a conventional mind, like forms and so forth. The first one does, so this is the principal meaning in the context here.
