This refers to being the same without any conceptual distinction, or being different without also being just essentially the same. The aforementioned problems result if they are understood in these ways, so they are explained to be improper. There is another way to explain this as well, as in “Neither different nor the same,”61This is from the homage in the prologue of Nāgārjuna’s Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, which states: “I pay homage to the best of speakers, the perfectly awakened one who taught dependent arising—the pacification of conceptual constructs—without ceasing or arising, not annihilated nor eternal, neither coming nor going, and neither different nor the same.” (D. 3824), 1b. that is, neither truly established as different nor truly established as the same.
