| English | Conventionally, each phenomenon is said to be apprehended with two natures, so all phenomena have natures. If they have these natures, they need to be either the same or different. The necessity for existent things to be either the same or different is established by reason. Therefore, here the two truths are essentially the same yet conceptually distinct (ngo bo gcig la ldog pa tha dad). They have a relationship of essential identity for which without one there is not the other. This relationship is held to be like that of a product and an impermanent phenomenon, or like a conch and the white of the conch, as it is stated in the Commentary on the Spirit of Awakening (Bodhicittavivaraṇa): |
