| English | The two truths are definitely two because there is a twofold division within objects of knowledge. There is no need for more to be enumerated, and no fewer can encompass them. [662] The way this definite number is established by reason is as follows: If the basis of division is objects of knowledge, then anything must be either one of the two truths. It is impossible for there to be something that is a third category—both or neither—that is neither of the two truths. This is because the two truths are mutually exclusive; they are in direct contradiction. This is the case because anything that has been conclusively determined (yongs gcod) by cognition to be a conventional truth is necessarily precluded (rnam bcad) from being an ultimate truth. And contrarily, anything that has been conclusively determined by cognition to be an ultimate truth is necessarily precluded from being a conventional truth, as was stated in the Light of the Middle Way.51See Kamalaśīla, Light of the Middle Way (Madhyamakāloka, D. 3887), 177a–177b. |
