| English | In the system of Sautrāntikas following reasoning, the essence of ultimate truth is that which objectively withstands analysis by reasoning and is not dependent on linguistic or conceptual designation. Here, “ultimate truth” (don dam bden pa), “entity” (dngos po), “particular” (rang mtshan), “efficacious phenomenon” (don byed nus pa’i chos), etc., have the same meaning. The essence of conventional truth is a phenomenon that exists merely as a linguistic or conceptual posit. Here, “conventional truth” (kun rdzob bden pa), “non-entity” (dngos med), “universal” (spyi don), “unefficacious phenomenon” (don byed mi nus pa’i chos), etc., have the same meaning. As it is said in the Commentary on Epistemology (Pramāṇavārttika): |
