arising do so in one of these four ways of arising. Here, the refutation of arising from the four extremes [809] is also a refutation of intrinsic arising. One might wonder, “In which category do those who accept Īśvara as a cause fall?” Master Bhāviveka made a distinction within those who accept causeless arising between two types. One type accepts a cause, but a cause that does not perform a function. So he said that those who claim Īśvara, Viṣṇu, spirit, and time, etc., as causes ạre included within those who claim causeless arising, and refuted them.488Bhāviveka, Lamp of Wisdom, 50b–51a. Yet Candrakīrti said in his auto-commentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way that they are included within the first three claims of arising.489Candrakīrti, Autocommentary on the “Introduction to the Middle Way,” 287a. By negating arising from the four extremes, arising is shown not to occur through any of them; thereby, entities are established as not intrinsically arising. The Introduction to the Middle Way says:
