| English | There would be another problem that all the functions of wood (which is the object burned) and fire (which is the agent that burns) would be the same. On this point, the Introduction to the Middle Way says: “If you assert arising from self, then producer and produced, and object and agent would be the same.”468Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.13ab. In this way, the negation of arising from self is a negation [805] in both of the two truths, so there is no need to apply the qualifier ultimately to the negation. Therefore, “Not from itself . . .”469Nāgārjuna, Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, I.1. is a general negation of arising from itself. The Introduction to the Middle Way says: “For this reason, designating that an entity arises from itself does not make sense in reality or in the world.”470Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.12cd. |
