Here is what this means: Take a sprout that is asserted to exist in the way of being unmanifest at the time of its cause. It absurdly follows that it would be pointless for it to arise again because its nature has already been established. If they respond here that there is no entailment, then consider that kind of sprout. It absurdly follows that its arising would be endless because, even while its nature has already been established, there is a purpose for it to arise again. These two absurd consequences expressing contradiction—that its arising again would be pointless and endless—undermine the Sāṃkhya’s claim of arising from self.
