As for wisdom, they must realize the subtle selflessness that is the lack of intrinsic nature in both persons and phenomena like aggregates. As for the aspect of method, for the purpose of only their own peace, they claim that it is necessary to cultivate the practices of discipline, meditative equipoise, the four truths, the twelve links of dependent arising, and the four brahma abodes (brahmavihāra). They have the immeasurables of love and compassion, but they lack great compassion. Alternatively, it is also said that they have great compassion, but lack the great compassion that can induce the superior intention to bear the burden of benefiting others. Yet we follow the first one. |
