It means that effects arise with natures like an illusion, a mirage, a reflection, a city of gandharvas, an apparition, and a dream. It means emptiness and selflessness. By asserting dependent arising, the two extremes of claiming existent and nonexistent entities are dispelled. By asserting the meaning of dependent arising to be the lack of intrinsic arising, the claims of existence like those of the realists are dispelled. By showing that while lacking intrinsic existence, causality exists like an illusion, the claims of nonexistence like those of the nihilists are dispelled.
