| English | Realists think, “If phenomena lack intrinsic natures that objectively exist, what else can there be?” Understanding the lack of intrinsic existence to be utter nonexistence, they do not know how to understand things like causality whatsoever. They think, “If there is the production of an effect from its cause, and a cause produces its effect, then what else is there besides [792] objective (rang ngos nas) arising?” They maintain that phenomena have natures that objectively exist. They say that if phenomena were empty, then causality would not be possible, and that emptiness would not be possible if there is an invariant causal relation. Thus, they hold the two truths to be a mass of contradictions, and stray far from a view of their unity. For these reasons, realists say, “If phenomena were empty of objective existence, then it would absurdly follow that in your Madhyamaka system there would be no causality at all—no arising or ceasing, and no four truths.” The Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way says:[p.217]The Profound Reality of Interdependence |
