| English | How to relinquish them is like this: When lax, bring to mind a joyous object that causes excitement in the mind; when agitated, bring to mind a somber object, causing the mind to become drawn within. The Anthology of Training states: “When disheartened, cultivate joy and raise your spirits. When agitated, think of impermanence and quell the mind.”399Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 114a; English trans. in Goodman, Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 200. The application of equanimity is to leave be when laxity and agitation have subsided, relaxing the efforts to raise the spirits or draw within, etc. Among the three types of equanimity (btang snyoms)—the indifferent feeling, the immeasurable impartiality, and the application of equanimity—this one is the latter. In short, look again to the mind; turn within to see if it is agitated or lax and seek out the quality of abiding. When this quality of abiding is there, alternate between loosening up and inducing the sharpness of the quality of clarity. A flawless meditative stabilization is accomplished by sustaining these two in alternation. Otherwise, when too tight, there will be a quality of clarity but it will be difficult for abiding to occur because of being too agitated. When too loose, there will be a quality of abiding but there will be no sharpness of clarity because of being too lax. Therefore, there needs to be an equal balance of the qualities of tightness and looseness. Since this is difficult to maintain, Candragomin said: |
