English

When bodhisattvas experience happiness, they discover great compassion for sentient beings who are attached. They relinquish their latent attachment. Likewise, when they experience suffering, a great compassion arises for those who are angry, and when they experience a neutral feeling, a great compassion arises for those who are stupid. They know the feelings of happiness to be impermanent and the feelings of suffering to be painful.383See Inquiry of Ratnacūda (Ratnacūḍasūtra, H. 91, vol. 40), 374a–374b, cited in Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 130a; English trans. in Goodman, Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 225–226.[p.199]The Profound Reality of Interdependence
