You might wonder, “How is it upheld?” It is taught that it should be upheld after considering the vows to be guarded and guarding them as much as you can. You might think, “What happens if the commitment is broken?” There will be the fault of deceiving the buddhas, bodhisattvas, and gods, as it is established in texts like the Close Application of Mindfulness, which will be explained later.355See Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 9b; English trans. in Goodman, The Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 14. If you cannot uphold the bodhisattva vow, then you should not leave it as a mere aspiration, but uphold just some roots of [114] virtue, and for some time—uphold them for as long as you live, or for a week or a day. How it is a fault to not uphold any is established in a passage from the Kṣitigarbha Sūtra.356See Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 10a; English trans. in Goodman, The Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 15. It is fine to uphold just some of the trainings, or for as long of a time as you can; this is established in a passage from the medical sūtra.357Medicine Buddha Beryl’s Light Sūtra (Bhaiṣajyaguruvaiḍūryaprabhasūtra, H. 472). Cited in Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 10a; English trans. in Goodman, The Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 15–16. Yet this is merely how to train progressively in the discipline; it is not the actual bodhisattva vow because its aspects and duration are limited.
