Initially, to take up the aspirational spirit and then, after training the mind in the wish to train in the bodhisattva practices, to adopt the engaged spirit is a supreme method for those types who cannot practice the trainings from the beginning. Also, whether someone can practice the trainings or not, the mere thought that “I will become a buddha for the benefit of sentient beings” can be generated through the ritual. [109] The second hook of the commitment, the thought that “I will not forsake this attitude until achieving awakening,” must be generated based on a ritual. This is not appropriate for someone who cannot practice the trainings of the aspirational spirit. Either of these two are appropriate for the aspirational spirit, but it is not appropriate to take up the engaged spirit through a ritual and not practice the trainings. If you can practice the trainings of the engaged spirit from the beginning, both the aspirational and engaged spirits can be adopted together; this is how they are shown to be taken up in this text.
