| English | Furthermore, stinginess is a type of attachment. Both arhats who are śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas have also completely relinquished this along with its potentials. Therefore merely to eliminate all stinginess regarding things like your body and possessions is not the perfection of generosity. In order to become that, not only must the complete clinging of stinginess, which is an obstacle to generosity, be eliminated, but you must train the mind again and again to generate a giving attitude toward others, letting go of all things—like the body and possessions—from the depths of your heart. Moreover, from the start you can train the mind in aspiring from the depths of your heart to give to sentient beings through mentally imagining immeasurable things to give. This is stated in the Bodhisattva Grounds as a method with little difficulty for developing boundless merit; it is said to be the generosity of intelligent bodhisattvas.329See Asaṅga, Bodhisattva Grounds, 71a; English trans. in Engle, The Bodhisattva’s Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment, 227.
