In general, there are those who are objects of compassion who are desperate, tormented, and afflicted by the pains of various illnesses. In particular, there are beings who are ill at the time of an intermediate eon of disease, as mentioned in the Yogācāra Grounds, when the lifespan is twenty years and where most of them die from an incurable sickness in a terrible plague that spreads a disease there that lasts for seven months and seven days5315See Asaṅga, Yogācāra Grounds, the Many Grounds of the Main Part, 16b.For as long as beings are sick and until they are cured, by the power of whatever merit I have gathered, may I be a great medicine that dispels their illnesses. May I be an excellent, skilled physician that cures their diseases, and may I be a nurse that takes care of the sick gently. May I benefit them with these kinds of service. This is an aspiration to become medicine to alleviate sickness, like in the birth story of the gentle animal316The “gentle animal” (srog chags des pa) may refer to the carp that King Padmaka becomes to cure the disease, as seen in Haribhaṭṭa’s Jātakamālā. See note 281 above.and like the aspiration of the princess Jñānavatī to become a doctor who provides medicine.317Jñānavati’s offering is mentioned in Dayal, The Bodhisattva Doctrine in Buddhist Sanskrit Literature, 185.
