| English | Śāriputra, it would be fine to eat the flesh of your own thigh or shoulder out of hunger, but this is not the case for partaking of what was given in faith without seeing the problems or acknowledging where this comes from. Why is this? Śāriputra, I permit what is given in faith for those who are endowed and for those who are liberated, but not for others. Śāriputra, you might wonder, “What are the criteria for endowment and what are the criteria for liberation?” It is an endowment such that anything that is seen is not taken but is met with the thought of attaining nirvāṇa. It is an endowment such that, in order to avoid what is vicious and actualize what is virtuous, it is in general to renounce and to habituate to the noble path like your head or clothes are on fire. Liberation refers to stream-enterers who are free from the three lower realms, once-returners, nonreturners, and those who have become arhats. Śāriputra, those who train in the three trainings are liberated; they obtain what is given in faith. Śāriputra, just these are the criteria for endowment and liberation.
