English	These eight are called “unfree states” because there is no freedom or opportunity to practice the Dharma when you are born in them. What are these eight?”91Anon., Commentary on the Bhikṣuṇī Pratimokṣa Sūtra (Bhikṣuṇīpratimokṣasūtravṛtti, D. 4112), 12a. It goes on to describe them extensively. A commentary on the Letter to a Friend also says: “They are called ‘unfree states’ because there are no opportunities to practice virtue in these eight states.”92Mahāmati, Extensive Commentary on the Letter to a Friend, 96b. A person who is free from these eight unfree states is called “one who has attained freedom.” A Vinaya text says, “There is one opportune time for a person with pure conduct: when a tathāgata appears in this world and teaches the Dharma as well.”93This verse is cited in Nāgārjuna, Anthology of Sūtras (Sūtrasamuccaya, D. 3934), 150b.The Verse Summary of the Perfection of Wisdom says: “By relinquishing the eight unfree states one always finds opportunity.”94Verse Summary of the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajñāpāramitāsañcayagāthā, H. 17), 214b.

Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a compassionate being who is training on the path to buddhahood and aspires to eliminate the suffering of all beings and take all sentient beings to the state of enlightenment.
