English	Texts such as the commentary on the Letter to a Friend describe the long-lived gods as those in the perceptionless absorptions and the Formless Realm.88See Mahāmati, Extensive Commentary on the Letter to a Friend (Vyaktapadāsuhṛllekhaṭīkā, D. 4190), 96b. The perceptionless absorptions are part of the great result of abiding in the fourth meditative absorption; those who have meditated on the perceptionless absorptions take birth there immediately. Other than at the time of death, their six consciousnesses cease along with their accompaniments, while they remain there for many great eons without freedom to practice the Dharma. Ordinary beings who are born in the Formless Realm do not have the fortune to practice the path of liberation, so they are unfree. The Discourse on the Eight Unfree States explains that the gods of the Desire Realm, who are constantly distracted by pleasurable actions, also are long-lived gods.89See Aśvaghoṣa, Discourse on the Eight Unfree States (Aṣṭākṣaṇakathā, D. 4167), 177a. These four are the non-human unfree states.
