| English | Not to give the Dharma to others who want the Dharma out of malice, hatred, or jealousy is an afflictive misdeed. Not to do so with another attitude is a nonafflictive misdeed. There are two cases when it is not a misdeed due to the support: when one is very ill and when not knowing the Dharma. It is not a misdeed due to the purpose when not teaching is taken as a method to discipline. There are also four cases when not explaining the Dharma is not a misdeed due to the quality of the disciple: (1) when they would listen while looking for an opportunity to criticize, or listen with a disrespectful mind, with speech that is impolite, and with bad physical behavior; (2) when they would not believe it but would become scared upon hearing the vastness of the Dharma; (3) when they wouldn’t listen even when it is expressed clearly, and thereby, there is a concern for them falling into the lower realms by generating even more bad karma; and (4) when there is a concern that, if they got their hands on the Dharma, they would propagate it to those who were not suitable recipients. |
