| English | When invited to be a guest in a monastery, temple, or householder’s home, not to go or accept provisions such as food, drink, and clothes out of pride, malice, or hatred is an afflictive misdeed. Not to go out of idleness or laziness is a nonafflictive misdeed. There are two cases when it is not a misdeed due to the support: when one is sick and unable and when one has a prior obligation. There are two cases when it is not a misdeed due to the path: when one cannot go because of the distance and when there are many fearsome dangers such as thieves on the path. It is not a misdeed due to the host when one has been invited out of a harmful intention. There are six cases when it is not a misdeed due to the purpose: (1) when not traveling is taken as a method to discipline, (2) when guarding against obstacles to the continuity of virtuous practice, (3) when concerned that an opportunity to listen to a previously unheard Dharma teaching will be lost, (4) when concerned that it will be an obstacle to listen [149] to an unheard discourse, (5) when it is to protect many others from malice, and (6) when it is to protect the internal rules of a community, such as turning the alms bowl down [denying an offering]. |
