If one defeat occurs, then it is impossible to attain the first bodhisattva ground in this life. Also, the previously present assemblage of proximate causes for that ground does not develop, and no fortune will be produced that was not there. Moreover one will go to a lower realm in the future, wander in cyclic existence for a long time, and be separated from virtuous spiritual friends. If this is said to occur with one defeat, then it is needless to mention about what happens if they occur again and again. Therefore do not think that “If a defeat occurs, I can just take the vow again.” It is said that you must not be blemished by defeats even at the cost of your life. The Way of the Bodhisattva says: “By mixing powerful downfalls . . .” (4.11).450See Tsongkhapa, Highway to Awakening, 58a; English trans. in Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 183.[p.225]The Great Hum
