This is the root downfall of forsaking the aspirational spirit of awakening. This is said to be a root downfall in the Skillful Means Sūtra. The one who supports the production of this downfall must be someone with the bodhisattva vow. In the instant they forsake the vow, in one instant they have the vow and in the next moment they forsake the vow; merely forsaking the vow excludes them from being a bodhisattva.442Kunzang Sönam relies heavily on Tsongkhapa’s Highway to Awakening in this section. Following the Peking edition of Tsongkhapa’s text, Mark Tatz reads that they are (as opposed to are not) excluded from being bodhisattvas. See Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 182 and 289n306. It appears that Kunzang Sönam is following another edition of Tsongkhapa’s text in his remarks (for example, Tashi Lhunpo), for he says they are not excluded, yet this contradicts the sentence that follows so seems to be an error. One should know that this is also the case for the fifth root downfall, harboring a wrong view. Therefore there is a root downfall simply by these two occurring, so there does not need to be the complete fetters (kun dkris) in place as is the case with the others, which will be explained later.443See page 225.
