English

The object is someone else who can understand the meaning. How it is expressed is to say, after teaching the doctrine of emptiness, that you have the forbearance of a direct realization of the meaning of profound emptiness[p.220]The Great Hum

while not having realized emptiness yourself. Then you say, “I am teaching you out of love; you too can realize it directly, so meditate like this and you can become like me!” When this is motivated by any afflictive intention except jealousy, it is deceptive, false speech; it is a root downfall if the hearer understands what is said. If the one who says this is a fully ordained monastic with the bodhisattva vow, then it is said to be an occasion of defeat for both pratimokṣa and the Mahāyāna. This seems to be the case for the other eleven downfalls as well.
