| English | To produce the downfalls that will be explained, two features need to be in place: (1) the bodhisattva vow has been taken and not relinquished and (2) the mind is in a normal state, not a state of insanity and so on. There are determined to be just two classes or categories of downfalls to be avoided that are produced on this basis: those that are grounds for defeat and those that are grounds for a misdeed. There are not several classes of downfalls as in the case of the pratimokṣa vows. Thus there are two categories that will be explained: the category of defeats (pham pa) and the category of misdeeds (nyes byas). |
