| English | The cause of fulfillment for each of the respective three disciplines, in succession, is (1) to disregard desires in the past, present, and future, (2) to not adopt the discordant factors of the six perfections, and (3) to help others in their endeavors and stand by them in suffering, and so on. Moreover, if bodhisattvas have both the discipline of restraint and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings in their continuum, then they do not need to have a manifest intention to be restrained from what is to be avoided or to benefit beings, such as helping them in their endeavors. This is because it is explicitly said in the Highway to Awakening that even when their minds get distracted elsewhere or when they fall asleep, these two disciplines are present and manifest.385See Tsongkhapa, Highway to Awakening, 25a; English trans. in Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 131–32. The Highway to Awakening is Tsongkhapa’s commentary on the Discipline chapter of Asaṅga’s Bodhisattva Grounds. Illustrated by this, when one’s continuum also has the spirit of awakening that has not dissipated, there need not be a manifest hope and conscious aspiration to pursue omniscience for the benefit of sentient beings because there is no reason for a root downfall to occur in that case, as will be explained later. |
