English

The nature of the discipline of benefiting sentient beings is this: To summarize, it is known to be elevenfold. After genuinely taking the bodhisattva vow and through completely being embraced by the Mahāyāna spirit of awakening, it is to accomplish various actions for the welfare of others: including those to be trained who need company, those who do not know the way, those who have helped, those who are tormented by fear, those who are afflicted by suffering, those who are destitute, those who want provisions, those who wish for someone like-minded, those who are going the right way, those who are going the wrong way, and those who are to be tamed by miracles.384See Asaṅga, Bodhisattva Grounds, 75b–82a; English trans. in Engle, The Bodhisattva’s Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment, 249–59.
