| English | The nature of the discipline of restraint is this: It is any of the vows of the five kinds of monastics that are genuinely embraced by the Mahāyāna spirit of awakening in the continuum of a monastic; any of the vows of a male or female layperson if the person is a householder with the bodhisattva vow; and, if one holds the bodhisattva vow but is in a support (like a god) that is not suitable for the pratimokṣa vow, the disciplines that are shared with pratimokṣa for avoiding what is reprehensible by nature, such as avoiding the ten vicious actions or the seven vicious actions of body and speech.
