The first negative factor is, with an intention to deceive, to try to trick someone who is honorable, such as a preceptor, master, or teacher. It is not necessary here that you are successful in the deception. The second is to try to[p.191]The Great Hum

bring someone who has done something virtuous, without regrets, to regret the virtue that they have done; that is, it is an intention to make someone regret something they did that is not something they should regret. It is not necessary for this that you are successful in bringing them to regret. The third is, with a hostile attitude, to say unpleasant things and to criticize someone who has entered the Mahāyāna with a spirit of awakening that has not dissipated. The fourth is to act with an intent to deceive or trick any other person or to act dishonestly toward them without a superior intention. This is said to be doing such things as using deceptive weights or scales. Also, the Compendium of Abhidharma explains deception (sgyu) as presenting something that lacks a quality to have that quality, and trickery (g.yo) as a dishonest technique to conceal something’s flaw.367See Asaṅga, Compendium of Abhidharma (Abhidharmasamuccaya, D. 4049), 50b–51a; yet these terms are not described this way here.
