English

All thoughts that aspire to supreme awakening, in the mind and body of a god or nāga and so on, are suitable to act as the support for taking the aspirational spirit of awakening. Yet it is said that a support that upholds the aspirational spirit by a ritual—one that is complete and genuine, and is the actual support for the bodhisattva vow—should be someone who has given rise in their mindstream to a little bit of mental experience with the spirit of awakening. This occurs through having trained the mind well in the attitudes shared with the lesser and middling beings, and in the trainings of the instructions of the sevenfold causal process, such as acknowledging that beings have been your mother.361On Atiśa’s sevenfold causal process for bringing about the spirit of awakening, see the translation in Tsong-kha-pa, Great Treatise, 35–49. See also Geshe Tashi Tsering, Awakening Mind, 33–50.
