Now recently, when the author of a certain commentary on the Bodhicaryāvatāra commented on this passage, he explained it as meaning that “the ultimate nature of things, being free from all ontological extremes—existence, nonexistence, both, and neither—is not the object of the mind. For mind and language belong to the relative. They are not ultimate.” His way of commenting, whereby line 3 is taken to be a proposition and line 4 an evidential sign, is incorrect. For it does not automatically follow that if something is a relative truth, it cannot assess the absolute. If this were not so [if the mind on the relative level were unable to assess the absolute], it would follow that the ultimate truth would have no existence whatever, for it would not be the object of the mind’s assessment. And if our opponent [Mipham] asserted this, it would follow that the two truths are not two different aspects of a single reality [ngo bo gcig la ldog pa tha dad], for one of them (the ultimate) would not be established. But this he cannot accept, for it is said in the Bodhicittavivāraṇa:
