| English | If the Shrāvakas accepted that, in the mind-stream of the people they are talking about, there is a craving elicited by the view of the transitory collection, it would serve no purpose [for Shāntideva] to ask, “But why should they not have . . . ?” And it is perfectly correct to say that the reference to “ignorance” indicates the existence of another defiled craving. And because this is what is understood from the earlier debate, all that Mipham says is meaningless chatter. It shows that he does not understand even the general import of the teaching of the great master and is like someone shooting an arrow without identifying the target—a laughingstock indeed for the learned. Mipham’s assertions stem, for the most part, simply from wrong view. I do not have the leisure to refute each point individually, but I shall refute some of them through scriptural authority and reasoning when the occasion arises. |
