| English | Regarding the text “If through removal of defilement you are freed, your freedom should occur at once” (9, 45ab), I mentioned only very briefly in the Ketaka Jewel the way in which the Gelugpa interpretation does not square with the actual wording of the Bodhicaryāvatāra. I shall therefore discuss it here in a little more detail. This is the moment in the text where an investigation is made whether or not the Shrāvakas gain liberation from samsara. However, in the explanation of the earlier stanza 40c (“But as the scriptures have themselves proclaimed . . . ”), it was explained how the liberation of the Shrāvakas, while being a liberation from samsara, is not the final liberation. And this is subsequently set out in stanza 45, which begins “If through removal of defilement you are freed, [your freedom should occur at once].” |
