For when one comes to the clear understanding that the aggregates are manifold and impermanent phenomena, one cannot believe in an “I” that is similarly plural. Neither can one grasp at an “I” in any one of the aggregates taken individually.42The realization that the aggregates are manifold and impermanent will result in the understanding that the aggregates taken together cannot constitute the personal self. The realization that the aggregates are just labels imputed on collections of partless particles will result in the understanding that no single aggregate (consciousness, for example) can serve as the basis for clinging to a personal self. |
