One may think that the expression “imputed through cognitive activity” refers only to the grasping of coarse, extended objects, or simply to the awareness of what object is present. But if the object—the vase and so forth on the conventional level—does not have an extramental basis for imputation, the situation is untenable and not different from the problem mentioned earlier.32The point that Mipham seems to be making here is that all cognition on the conventional level, that is, all acts of knowing in the transactional relations of life, require the operation of the conceptual mind. The nonconceptual sense powers must work with the conceptual mind if knowledge in the ordinary sense is to occur. But this is not the same as saying that “all phenomena are the imputations of thought,” which, from a Madhyamaka point view, is intended to mean that phenomena are without true existence from their own side.
