that things are validly established just through mental imputation, it follows that everything that is merely imputed by the mind—the Almighty Creator, prakṛti, permanent sound, and so on—is established. There is no difference between such entities and concrete objects like pots, which are said not to be established from their own side even on the conventional level. For no distinction can be made between things that are said to be merely imputations through cognitive activity.26Mipham’s point is that if one says that phenomena are no more than mental labelings even on the conventional level—an assertion that flies in the face of the basic Prāsaṅgika practice of taking as the relative truth the unexamined perceptions of the worldly consensus—one muddles the two kinds of reasoning: that which establishes the ultimate and that which establishes the relative. In doing so, one invalidates precisely the factor (the detection of the characteristics of objects by means of valid cognition) that enables one to distinguish real things that are true conventionally (books, cars, houses) from imaginary items such as mirage water, unicorns, the Creator God, and so on.
