At the present time a certain person has written in the commentary he has made on the Bodhicaryāvatāra, “To state the matter briefly, when the self-knowing mind is refuted, the refutation is made on the ultimate level. It is not a refutation of the conventionally designated self-knowing mind that is contrasted with inert matter. If this were refuted, we would have to say that our own mind is an object hidden from itself; that there is no evidence for the existence of a mind within oneself; and that this would do away with the conventional cognizance of extramental things.”185Ketaka Jewel, p. 102, commentary to stanza 25. Note that Drakar does not quote Mipham in full here. He writes too that “these and other arguments invalidate such a position, as the King of Reasoning has explained”; and “Although in this [Prāsaṅgika] tradition, it is said [by some] that even on the conventional level, the self-knowing mind and the alaya are not asserted, the fact is that on the conventional level, they are neither refuted nor affirmed. They are only refuted on the ultimate level.”
