It is true that the Shrāvakas who are the proud upholders of their tenet system speak in this way.128That is, they claim to be Shrāvakas but are in fact just philosophers and fail to penetrate the real meaning of the Dharma. Nevertheless, in the Shrāvakas’ very own tradition, it is declared that the achievement of the result derives from the direct realization of the personal no-self. This being so, if those persons who attain the fruit of the Shrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha path did not know that part-possessing things (chariots, pots, and so on) and the gross aggregates (form and so on)—which are regarded as being existent on the relative level—are simply imputed on the basis of their constitutive parts, and are without intrinsic reality, there would be no way for them to understand that the personal self is without real existence. If one clings to the aggregates as having the nature of single, truly existent entities, or of truly existent continua or assemblies, there is no difference between them and the conceived object of self-clinging—whether in terms of their nature, as objects of focus, or of the mental attitude that one has in their regard. Therefore there is no way to reverse one’s clinging to the personal self in connection with aggregates conceived in such a way. As long as the conceived object of innate ego-clinging is not disproved, it is impossible to overturn one’s clinging to a self, and consequently there is no means of liberation from samsara. Conversely, if one is liberated from samsara, it is certain that, once the conceived object has been refuted, the absence of self is necessarily realized.
