Now in accordance with their tenet system, some may take the subtle particles (the indivisible particle of matter and the indivisible instant of consciousness) as ultimate realities. But this is the result of mental analysis that merely asserts that the particles really exist. On the other hand, it is only the aggregates, the basis of pleasure and pain, that appear. And for as long as they do so, they appear as part-possessing entities. By contrast, partless entities cannot appear. Even if one were to accept that there exists a multitude of partless particles of matter and instants of consciousness, it is nevertheless ascertained by reasoning and then directly realized that they are not the “I”—they cannot in themselves give rise to the mistaken clinging to a self.123According to the argument so far, clinging to the personal self is uprooted by the realization that, far from being a single, unitary basis for the clinging to the self, the aggregates are manifold and impermanent. The aggregates moreover are said to be manifold not just in the sense that there are five of them but also because each one of them is itself an aggregate, a collection of many constituent parts. And, according to the Abhidharma, these constituents may be reduced in the last analysis to the partless particles regarded as ultimately existent. Consequently, the Abhidharma asserts the reality of the partless particles as a means to understand the actual constitution of the aggregates and thus the unreality of the personal self. In themselves, however, the partless particles are not the basis of ego-clinging, since all the transactions related with pleasure and pain, acceptance and rejection, and so on, are based on the gross aggregates, mistakenly taken to form a single entity.
