This text shows that some Shrāvakas do not assert emptiness in the sense of dependent arising.115In fact, Chandrakīrti is at this point examining and refuting the mistaken view of the Sammitiyas, one of the eighteen Shrāvaka schools, according to which the self is identified with the aggregates. See Mipham, Word of Chandra, 285–86. Consequently, although they may realize the nonexistence of the merely permanent self, they do not abandon their apprehension of, and clinging to, a self that exists from its own side (innate self-clinging).[p.245]The Wisdom Chapter

If they are unable to destroy this clinging to phenomena as gross whole objects, which in fact are just imputations on collections of things, like bubbling foam, how could they realize that form is by nature empty? Therefore, not realizing the ultimate nature of forms and so on, when they apprehend something physically attractive, they focus on it with desire, thinking “I will meet with it.” This happens because, as it was said, “the nature of this form they do not understand.” Not understanding the real constitution of form and so on, they rest on the object, and the fact that their (innate) self-clinging has not been discarded shows that they are subject to defilement.116Tib. phra rgyas rkyang. For example, the desire just mentioned. This is what one may understand according to a straightforward reading of the autocommentary.
