| English | Therefore, these two obscurations are posited from the point of view of what chiefly obstructs liberation and omniscience. The defilements that come from the view of the transitory collection are said to be obscurations through defilement. The defilements that come from the belief in the reality of the three spheres are said to be cognitive obscurations.99That is, the three spheres of subject, object, and action. In general, however, although defilements like desire and so on cannot but act as obstacles to the complete and perfect cognition of all knowledge objects, and although the belief in the reality of the three spheres cannot but assist the defilements that bring about a birth in samsara (for as long as there is clinging to an “I”), nevertheless, the two obscurations are posited according to their principal effect. The root of samsara is the innate view of the transitory collection, and when this is overthrown, all the defilements deriving from it that bring about samsara are certainly overthrown. Liberation is thereby achieved; and yet this alone is unable to eliminate that which veils the presence of omniscience. However, when the innate clinging to the “I” has been eliminated, even if belief in the reality of the three spheres persists, the defilements no longer arise because the conditions for them are incomplete.100In other words, when clinging to the personal self has been dispelled, a return to samsara is no longer possible even if the state of omniscience is not directly produced. |
