Mipham says that clinging to the phenomenal self corresponds to ignorance in general, whereas clinging to the personal self is a particular kind of ignorance. It is like the genus tree compared with the species juniper. He says that the Shrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats do not realize the emptiness of all knowledge objects, the aggregates and so on, and that the emptiness that they do realize is of a lesser kind. Moreover, the way in which the Bodhisattvas eliminate what is to be eliminated consists, on the Mahāyāna path of seeing, in the elimination of the imputed aspect of the two obscurations (sgrib gnyis kun btags kyi cha). Subsequently, they gradually eliminate both obscurations in equal measure; and from the eighth ground onward—there being no more defilement—only the cognitive obscurations are removed. And this, says he, is not to be muddled by the opinions of Tibetans.85Ketaka Jewel, p. 123. I do not see however that what he says has any substance.
