So, for example, the words “This craving . . . ” (stanza ix, 46c) are evidently the rejoinder to what was said immediately beforehand, namely, “Only for a while . . . For it is certain that they have no craving that will make them take rebirth.” But if we follow Drakar Tulku’s exegesis, Shāntideva’s words “This craving that they have indeed is not defiled,” as he understands them, do not make sense. He ought rather to have said, “In the mind-stream of the individual whom the Shrāvakas consider to be liberated there is still a craving that leads to further existence. Indeed, since the innate view of the transitory collection that clings to the person as being established according to its characteristics has not been eliminated, why should there not be a craving elicited by it?” But Shāntideva does not speak in this way. The Shrāvaka opponents say that it is certain that they have no craving that is the cause of further (samsaric) existence. And this we may well understand because it is after they have stated their basic position—that they do not have the defiled craving leading to further existence—that Shāntideva replies with “This craving that they have indeed is not defiled.”73Intrinsic to the Gelugpa interpretation is that there are two kinds of craving, as mentioned in n. 71. But here the Gelugpas are in difficulties. For if their theory is to square with Shāntideva’s actual words, they are obliged to say that the second kind of craving is undefiled. But this is absurd, says Mipham, because a craving that leads back into samsara cannot possibly be so.
