Trepo Drakar Tulku, Lozang Pelden Tendzin, from glorious Drepung, the great center of Dharma, who is renowned for his clear intelligence, has composed an exposition of the profound crucial points of Madhyamaka entitled A Pleasurable Discourse for Those of Clear Understanding (Blo gsal dga’ ba’i gtam). It is a lucid exposition of his own tradition and was sent to me as a refutation. When it arrived, not only was I not displeased to receive it, I was as thrilled as a peacock at the sound of summer thunder. When people have embraced the tradition through which they enter the door of the Dharma, they naturally object to whatever is said against it. Such is the good and noble practice of sons who follow in the footsteps of their fathers. This is quite different from what we see now in these evil times, when people belittle the tradition that has come down to them—like the deity on which their flower has fallen during an empowerment—and delight in following a tradition that is not their own. They try to imitate others but without success, and they shamelessly barter away their vital strength.
