The Vijñanavadins23Tib.rnam rig smra ba (those who say that all is consciousness). This is another name for the Cittamātra or Mind-Only school. For more details on the True Aspectarians, a subdivision of this school, see Mipham, Teaching to Delight, 240. say that whatever appears to be real, whether in the outer world or within oneself, is like an optical illusion or dream. It has no reality outside the mind. The perception of a physical environment, mental states, and bodies is due to the ripening of distinct inner habitual tendencies. So although external things do not exist, the mind does; and even in dreams, it experiences objects such as the color blue and so on. How, they ask, can the Madhyamikas say that external objects are mere illusions and have no existence, and then say that the deluded mind does not exist either? For if the mind has no existence, what is the illusory object observed by— since there is no mind? The Madhyamikas use the same argument in reply.
